Uniting American Mothers
Our commitment is to more than policy, however; Chamber of Mothers is dedicated to truly uniting American mothers, prioritizing curiosity over judgment, and creating a country where every mother has what she needs to thrive. We envision a nation where no mother dies a preventable death, where paid family and medical leave is accessible to all, and where quality childcare is affordable for every family.
These are issues with overwhelming support across the country, yet they require focused and persistent advocacy to become reality.
Lasting change starts in communities
Chamber of Mothers has a local chapter model that unites mothers in community to speak up about the challenges they’re having and to create action plans to advocate for change on the state and local level. Our chapters are engaged in grassroots advocacy in strategic markets to drive progress on our three core pillars - paid family leave, accessible, affordable childcare, and improved maternal health.
A few examples:
- Cincinnati: Collaborated with lawmakers to draft a survey to better understand the needs of local childcare providers
- Boston: Strengthened legislative and community-based maternal mental health resources, including developing their own perinatal mental health tool, HEALMAMAS
- Phoenix: Testified in support of state maternal mental health bills that were then voted unanimously to pass out of committee
- New Hampshire: Partnered with New Futures to train members to write opinion articles to support policy change
- Denver: Connected with hundreds of mothers at a local family event to share the Vote Like A Mother campaign
- South Bay: Produced a comprehensive South Bay Area Voter Guide that provided resources and insights for local voters
- Tampa Bay: A member ran for office and credits Chamber of Mothers with inspiring her campaign
In order for systems to change, we need to hold structures of power accountable
Chamber of Mothers convenes in Washington, D.C. on a semi-monthly basis to speak strength to power in bipartisan, bicameral meetings with members of Congress and government agencies to drive legislative and federal action on our three core pillars. Since our founding, we have held more than 60 meetings on Capitol Hill in the House and Senate with both Democrat and Republican members, as well as dozens more with federal and state agencies.
In 2024, one of our primary focuses was urging and working toward bipartisan support for the Black Maternal Health Momnibus - a multi-agency effort to end preventable maternal mortality, severe maternal morbidity, and maternal health disparities in the United States. As part of our work with the Black Maternal Health Caucus and the Department of Health and Human Services, we are strategically working with partners in the public and private sectors in order to bring along the support needed to pass the Momnibus.
Chamber of Mothers has been recognized as a trusted thought leader in shaping the future of legislation impacting moms. In 2024, we were consulted by Representative Ro Khanna (CA-17) on his childcare policy, drawing from our team of experts and on-the-ground knowledge to inform solutions that support families. We were also called upon by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (NY) to provide input on her bipartisan paid leave proposal with Senator Bill Cassidy (LA), working together to ensure that her policy addresses the real challenges faced by moms and families in accessing meaningful time off.
A few examples:
- In March 2024, we partnered with the White House, U.S. Digital Services, and the Commonwealth Fund to convene in New York City with global leaders to compare support for mothers and families across the globe and co-design a new way forward for American mothers and families.
- During Black Maternal Health Awareness Week, we hosted our inaugural Maternal Health Power Breakfast with Rep. Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) of the Congressional Dads Caucus, Rep. Lauren Underwood (IL-14) of the Black Maternal Health Caucus, and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (MI-12) of the Congressional Mamas Caucus as well as private sector C-suite leaders to make shared commitments to improve maternal health in America.
Vote Like A Mother
In 2024, Chamber of Mothers launched VOTE LIKE A MOTHER® - a dedicated voter registration and education campaign targeting mothers. Moms and allies in all 50 states engaged with our VOTE LIKE A MOTHER® campaign, using our online resources to access critical information about their local and national candidates. Over 1,000 people used our BallotReady tool to build personalized ballots, featuring top-of-the-ticket and down ballot candidate profiles, positions, and propositions relevant to moms and families.
We partnered with Allyson Felix, one of the most decorated track and field athletes in history, to champion VOTE LIKE A MOTHER® by releasing a voting resource guide with essential information for moms on how to take time off work, secure transportation to the polls, arrange childcare, and more. Allyson’s support helped bring attention to the unique needs of mothers heading to the polls. Social media support from other inspiring moms and family-focused brands, including influential voices like Uzo Aduba, Connie Britton, Elaine Welteroth, Rosario Dawson, Whitney Port, Hatch, and Ritual, helped amplify the campaign’s reach - which garnered 580 million social media impressions.
